A Comprehensive Overview and Benefits of the SCFE Process
Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SCFE or SFE) is a commonly used green extraction technique offering many perks compared to classical or conventional extraction processes. Some of these advantages include:
- Higher extraction yields
- Lower environmental impacts
- Improved selectivity
- Better fractionation capabilities
In this post, we will discuss this technique in detail, covering its brief overview, advantages, etc. Additionally, you’ll learn about a globally renowned Indian exporter of top-tier CO2 oil and also take a close look at their SCFE CO2 extract catalog. Let’s start the discussion.
SCFE Overview
SCFE is the technique of separating an element which is called the extractant from another component which is called the matrix. This process is conducted using supercritical fluids that act as an extracting solvent. Extraction is mostly done from a solid matrix. However, the matrix can be liquids as well. The uses of the supercritical fluid extraction process can be seen for the following 3 purposes:
- Removing unwanted material from a product
- Collecting the target products like essential oils
- Using it as a sample formulation step for analytical reasons
Carbon dioxide is the most frequently used supercritical fluid for this process. Sometimes, it’s combined with other co-solvents like ethanol or methanol to improve its efficiency. Temperature above 31° C and 74 bar pressure are considered the most suitable conditions for supercritical fluid extraction.
Advantages of CO2 Oil
Manufacturers can alter the properties of the supercritical fluid for selective extraction by adjusting temperature and pressure. For instance, you can extract volatile oils from a plant using low pressures of 100 bar. The liquid extraction process will also remove lipids. You can extract lipids using pure carbon dioxide at higher pressures. After that, you can remove phospholipids by adding ethanol to the solvent. The same method can also extract unsaturated fatty acids and polyphenols from wine waste.
Using a supercritical fluid as the solvent means it can penetrate the matrix more quickly, and the target substance can move out of the matrix into the solvent faster than a liquid solvent. Due to this reason, extraction through the SCFE process is done in a shorter time frame.
You don’t need external heat to conduct the SCFE process. Due to this reason, oil extracted through this process has intact constituents. In addition, its aroma closely resembles the natural herb and has a longer shelf life.
